What do the numbers on the strings mean?	The thickness of strings is represented in inches, eg .010 or 1/100th of an inch thickness. However to make them easier to read and quicker to talk about we omit the decimal point as in common usage and refer to .010s as 10s.
What does "a set of 9s" or "a set of 10s" mean	In common useage if you refer to a set of 10s you are talking about a complete set of six strings with .010" as the highest sounding, thinnest, or 1st string.
When are wound strings used?	Wound strings are always used on the 4th, 5th and 6th strings for the lowest sounding strings and sometimes (on medium to heavier gauge sets) on the 3rd string also. Where this happens we show a w after the string thickness, eg 20w.

Why have you got a w against some of the strings in your listing	On the 3rd string to show that this is also a wound string, the 4th, 5th and 6th strings will always be wound.
What is a light set of strings?	A light set, referring to the thickness of the strings, is a comparative term and means different things to different manufacturers. Sometimes a set referred to as light (eg to 11s or 12s, actually means it is pretty heavy or even very heavy. The terms extra light or super light are then used to describe the string thickness most guitarists would use 9s or 10s.

I just want normal strings, so what strings should I use?	If you are a relative beginner and do not have strong opinions of your own on this one, bear in mind most electric guitarists use 9s while most acoustic guitarists use 10s. (These will often be referred to as extra light).
Why would I choose very light strings?	For flexibility if you like to pull the strings around for string bending effects, as well as for being able to play with a slightly lighter touch.

Why would I choose heavy strings?	For slide style playing, a strong-handed playing technique or for extra depth of sound, particularly noticeable on the lowest notes or 4th, 5th and 6th strings.
I cannot see any heavy strings listed. Where are they?	Manufacturers tend not to call heavy strings heavy. They are often listed as medium and bought mistakenly by players who think they are getting the normal style of strings. Gauges 12 or the rare 13s definitely qualify as being heavy even when referred to as medium or medium heavy.

What are custom or hybrid sets?

These are strings with lighter top ends and thicker heavier bass strings. Thus you get a responsive flexible top end and a richer sound on the bass.

I have a bronze set but some of the strings look silver. Is this a faulty set?	Unwound strings in bronze and phosphor bronze acoustic strings will usually appear silver, the bronze strings are actually just the wound ones in a set.
Why are some strings phosphor bronze?	Phosphor bronze is used to give extra resistance to corrosion and for a slightly brighter tone also. Although usually better and slightly more expensive than standard bronze, some guitarists may prefer special makes in standard bronze, (eg Martin standard bronze strings are used by many discriminating guitarists)
What type of guitar are electric strings designed for?	Electric strings are designed for solid electrics (eg Fender Stratocaster or Telecaster, Gibson Les Paul etc) are normally made of nickel with a silvery finish. Electric strings are lighter than the comparably played acoustic strings.

Should I use electric or acoustic strings on my electro-acoustic guitar?

If you have an electro-acoustic model in wood or with synthetic moulded back (sometimes referred to as semi-acoustic when they are really semi-electric!) this should normally be fitted with acoustic strings for best results.
